A Letter from The Folks at The Patch June 6th 2009 It has been a while since my last update on our website and a lot has been happening on the High Street in Yeadon. The end of April saw the beginning of a six month, £1 million regeneration scheme from the top roundabout to the bottom of Yeadon High Street. So far they have moved drains, dug up old flagstones on pavements on one side - our side first - leaving dips of tarmac in between flags for entrance to shops. These entrances will be done on Sundays when we are closed, they started outside the Veg Patch yesterday (June 5th) so no display, added to that it poured down all afternoon - still raining actually! There is still a lot of work to be done, the pavements are being widened with better looking flags and kerbs; the road will be chicaned from top to bottom with a top speed limit of 20mph and parking bays alternated down the High Street with extended parking allowance of 1 hour instead of half an hour. At the end of all this work Yeadon High Street will look great, supposed to be shopper friendly so hopefully this will happen, cannot let Mr Morrison have all our trade. Customers are urged to help us during this time (and afterwards) to ensure that we keep trading and are not put off by the roadworks. The workmen are very helpful in this difficult time and obviously things have to be done in a certain order and will cause disruption to us retailers but we will persevere as we have been doing since the start of the credit crunch - and thanks to our loyal customers and friends who have supported us and continue to do so. On to family matters, daughter Becki (16 going on 25) is sitting her GCSE's - a trying time for all, I remember mine with horror though they seem a lot harder today. We have been holidaying in Flamborough, Northumberland, Sands End and North Wales for long weekends. Unfortunately we seemed to have had summer, glorious weather end of May but not so in flaming June, only hope the weather forecasters are correct in their assumption of a long hot summer ahead for July and August. We have continued to stock bedding plants, (shortly ending as they should be bedded by now!) but have lovely roses, fuschias, geraniums of all colours, alterns, hanging baskets and tubs of glorious colour which are proving very popular. We have also gone back to basics in the shop as last year's update says, concentrating on food - fresh and tinned etc. The curry sauces are always in stock and very delicious; gluten free frozen goods from The Gluten Free Kitchen are also stocked, their puds are lovely and a real treat; I still make a lot of jams under Joanie's label, current offerings are Strawberry & Apple, Mixed Fruit, Strawberry, Raspberry and also Hot & Tangy Piccalilli, Tomato & Apple Chutney and a new one called Tomato Marmalade which is an American recipe and great with cheese. Speaking of cheeses, Snowdonia have again proved a popular choice especially the Black Bomber which is a great mature cheddar. The Veg Patch still serves soups and baked potatoes for lunches, have put the casseroles on hold until autumn but judging by the current weather it may reappear before then! Susan's Soups can be purchased frozen as before now that our large freezer has been fixed and we can stock more, also Birchfield Ice Cream is available. Well, I will end this update with a wish for a warmer summer than the past few years and a prosperous one for all during these pressing times. Thanks to all our friends and customers as previously mentioned but reiterated as without you we would not be here. All the best,
Susan, Mick & Becki "The Folks at The Patch"
